How to manually update PhraseExpander if autoupdate fails
When updating PhraseExpander, you might encounter an error stating that a file is in use and cannot be replaced.

This can happen when PhraseExpander was unable to close a file during the update procedure.
To resolve this issue, we need to ensure PhraseExpander is fully closed so we can download and install PhraseExpander manually.
Option 1: Close PhraseExpander
In most scenarios, this method is sufficient to close the required files.
- If the error message is still present, click Cancel installation
- Exit PhraseExpander by clicking File > Exit
- Download the latest version of PhraseExpander
- Run the installation file - this will require admin rights
Option 2: Kill the PhraseExpander process
If the problem persists having followed the steps in Option 1, we can use Windows Task Manager to end the PhraseExpander process.
Here's how, in Windows 11:
- If the error message is still present, click Cancel installation
- Exit PhraseExpander by clicking File > Exit
- Press CTRL+ SHIFT + ESC to open Task Manager
- In the Processes tab, check for Nagarsoft PhraseExpander (it may appear as PhraseExpander).
- If PhraseExpander was not present, go to step 5.
- If PhraseExpander is running, right-click it and select End task to terminate the process.
- Download the latest version of PhraseExpander
- Run the installation file - this will require admin rights
All your data is preserved during the update.
