Arranging List Variables side-by-side and wrapping text

List Variables can display their options side by side in the PhraseExpander input form. This helps keep the form compact when the choices are short, such as medication allergies, symptoms, locations, or other brief selections.

The input form also wraps longer variable labels and text more effectively, so forms can use the available space without becoming unnecessarily wide.

When to use side-by-side options

Use side-by-side options when a List Variable contains short choices that are easy to scan on one or more rows.

With side-by-side display enabled, these options can appear across the input form instead of each option taking its own line.

Enable side-by-side display

  1. Open the template that contains the List Variable.
  2. Create or edit the List Variable.
  3. Add the list options you want to display in the input form.
  4. Check Arrange items side by side.
  5. Click OK to save the variable.

When the template runs, PhraseExpander displays the List Variable options side by side when there is enough horizontal space.

How wrapping works

Longer variable labels can wrap inside the input form. This makes it easier to use descriptive questions without forcing the form to become too wide.

If the input form is resized, PhraseExpander adjusts the layout so the label and the List Variable options continue to fit the available space.

  • Side-by-side display works best when each option is short. If the list contains longer phrases, the options may wrap onto additional rows or be easier to read as a standard vertical list.
  • Options that expand to show additional UI elements, such as nested variables, are displayed on a separate line so their related fields remain clear.
  • You can turn off Arrange items side by side at any time to return the List Variable options to a vertical layout.
